This is an educational, research-based contest. Contestants will pick a veterinary science or animal science-based topic that relates to beef cattle production. Contestants will research, and create a poster describing the topic, background, and conclusion for the beef science topic. The contestants of this contest will create a poster prior to TJAS and present an overview of their topic to a panel of judges.

CERTIFIED ANGUS BEEF® COOK-OFF

Teams will compete at the National Junior Angus Show in Louisville, KY.

CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST

The purpose of the writing contest is to encourage the enhancement of written communication skills.

2026 Creative Writing Contest Topics

  • Novice topic: Write about your favorite Angus animal(s)
  • Junior topic: Write about an experience you had with a calf during the halter breaking process.
  • Intermediate topic: Describe a moment you are most proud of, especially because no one was watching.
  • Senior topic: Write about raising Angus cattle in a changing world

This contest enables the junior member to use computer technology to design materials that promote the Angus breed and Angus activities.

2026 Graphic Design Contest Entry Themes:

Novice: Design a farm logo

Junior: Design your dream Grand Champion belt buckle.

Intermediate: Create a new label for your favorite fitting or grooming cattle product.

Senior: Your state is hosting the National Junior Angus Show in 2028. You are tasked with designing the
potential logo

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

Contestants may enter only one photo per category. Each entry may apply to no more than one subject category. The contestant should declare within what subject category the photo is to be judged, as the photograph is representative of the contestant’s interpretation of the category. Photos must have been taken by the contestant during the past year and cannot be altered, enhanced or have been previously entered in TJAS.
2026 Categories:

Angus Cattle – Photographs that highlight Angus cattle on the farm or ranch or at an
Angus event. The cattle need to be the dominant focus of the picture.
Angus Landscape – Photographs that focus on scenery around the farm or ranch. Angus
cattle need to be included in the photo.
Angus People – Photographs that show an Angus junior and/or family, friends, fellow
junior members, etc., either involved in activities on the farm or ranch or an Angus event.
Around the Farm or Ranch (ATFOR) – Photographs that highlight activities and scenes
around the farm or ranch. An Angus connection is not necessary.

PREPARED PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST

2026 Prepared Public Speaking Contest topic: Anything Angus! If you have something to say about Angus (cattle, history, careers, science, food, experiences, people, current events, etc.) we are all ears!

Prepared Public Speaking is NOT a contest at NJAS this year, but the TJAA Advisors voted to keep this contest available at our state show to continue to give our TJAA members the opportunity to speak in front of a panel of judges and gain valuable feedback for one of life’s most critical skills.

The contestant will fit one side of his or her animal for judging. Please see national rules for additional information. The top four contestants going to NJAS will advance to Nationals where they will compete as a team representing the state of Texas.

INDIVIDUAL SALES CONTEST

Individual sales talk: The objective of the contest is to gain a working understanding of performance, physical characteristics and pedigree information. Emphasis will be placed on content of sales pitch, communication skills, organization and flow, total effectiveness, and knowledge and ability to answer questions. The contest will follow NJAS Sales Talk Contest Rules/Objectives with the exceptions that 1) the Senior division scenario is provided below and 2) Individual time limits at the State Show will be 3-5 minutes for all age divisions. There are point deductions for going over/under time limits, registration papers missing, and or failure to follow contest guidelines. Following the conclusion of the presentation the individual will be allowed up to 3 minutes to answer questions from the judges.

The national team will be made up of the top placing individuals from each age division – a minimum of three and a maximum of four individuals will make up each team. National qualifying individuals who accept a spot on the Texas team for Nationals will be assigned a team coach and will be expected to practice as a team to prepare for the contest at Junior Nationals.

  • 2026 Senior Division Sales Talk Scenario (Applies to SENIORS ONLY): A Texas registered Angus breeder is looking for a heifer or bull to improve maternal traits and longevity in their herd without sacrificing carcass merit.
